Remembering New Orleans (Before Katrina)

by Yasmine03 - last update: Sep 14, 2005

Bourbon Street

A pantomime on Bourbon Street
What I remember best about New Orleans are the Jazz and the Bourbon Street, the Creole and the plantation house, the Nachez and the Mississippi River. I took four guided bus tours conducted by Greyhound and walked endlessly by the French Quarters. At night, people partied on the streets and though it was not a Mardi Gras season, you get to see some real acts!

That was three years ago. Reminiscing about the city's glory days could only bring sadness now. The devastation of Katrina has left New Orleans into a bowl of Gumbo. I have always been aware of the problems faced by New Orleans having researched before and after my visit there. Built 3 meters below sea level on the lake bed, they always joked about having to use the Gondola one day. No matter what, New Orleans is special to me.

My heart goes to all the people who live there and those who have touched me while I was there. I could only hope that they will remain strong to build their city again. Soon.

Yasmine, a thoughtful tribute to a place that needs to be remembered, so many lives have been affected. However, I imagine it will not be long before the French Quarter and Garden District are back in action. Let's hope they take care of other areas too.
