Getting TO/AROUND: A great way to get from Sultanahmet to Taksim and back is by City Bus.
Cost: 1 million Lira
I did not notice this specifically mentioned in other places I looked for info on getting around from one area to another, so I thought I would clue you in.
Bus T4 stops on the Hippodrome at Sultanahmet Square, North Bound travel side,
just before Ayasofya Medani - where the ATM machines are and Tour Buses park. Go past those to the corner and look left for the bus with the T4 sign in the window.
In Taksim Square there is a large bus area and you will be dropped off just before the turn in area. This is the same place you will get the bus to return.
At the curb near the steps to Taksim Square: There is a sign that says "Peron 3" and lists buses 61B, 83MT, & T4 with schedules.
Give the driver your Lira note and he will hand you a small metal and plastic tab. You take this tab and depress a round button on the front of a meter box that you just stepped passed as you where entering. Hand the tab back to the driver.
While I was there at the end of November, work was still progressing on the extension of the tram line over the Galata Bridge from Eminonu. I am not sure where the tram line will end, but it didnt appear that it was going all the way to Taksim square yet.
So for the near future this bus will still be the best way to get from these two important areas that I think most tourists will want to visit on more than one occasion during their stay.
