Venezuela, and Caracas are often overlooked as holiday destinations, due to tumultuous governments, consistent civic unrest and even a questionable human rights record. All the more reason I had to go. On a dare a friend of mine and I, had a few cocktails one evening, packed our bags and boarded a flight from IAD to Simón Bolívar International Airport..
We made reservations for two one bedroom suites at the Tamanaco Intercontinental. Hotel. The hotel is a fairly old hotel, but is still a center piece of life in Caracas for the power elite. The hotel is built with two wings of a center lobby. Both wings taper off to lower levels so that the end rooms have balconies. There is a large circular driveway which end at the lobby entrance. There is also a nice pool setup, with great sun access in the front of the hotel. Candidly the hotel is well maintained, but I think it needs a facelift. Much of the furnishings and decor reeks of being right out of the 70s. Again, it is very clean, and well maintained, it just seems old. And not the good old like Louis XV, the bad old like the Brady Bunch. Our accommodations included two "Cabana" Suites. They were around $230 each per night. I was a bit troubled by the 12:00 Noon check-out and 4:00 p.m. check in. I think the management will work with you, space allowed.
Unique Qualities: The hotel has a nice selection of restaurants. La Cabana had some great Pizzas and steaks. And we enjoyed many inexpensive cocktails at the Bull Pen Bar, which showed a variety (read mostly soccer) of sports shows. Just a short walk away is the Las Mercedes area. There are many great restaurants and bars here, as well as fashionable shops for the ladies.
We ventured out to a few local watering holes. One was El Mani es Asi. It was great. Lots of fun people who know how to party.
I am not a tennis player, but the hotel does boast at least three outside lit courts. There is also a a decent workout center for those that do not understand the world holiday.
The service and management of this hotel was equal to the highest anywhere. The attention to detail is obvious everywhere. All in all, I would stay here again. It is really one of the center pieces of the city, and you can never tell who you might run into.
There are a lot of things to do in Venezuela. We flew out to the Margarita Island, below the ABCs. It is growing fast, but is still a relatively good bargain for a beautiful place. We actually journeyed to Venezuela to see Angel Falls. The tallest waterfall in the world. As it turns out we never made it there, as apparently they want you to PLAN this stuff in advance. : ) Instead we rented a Mercedes G350 SUV and tooled around the city, We rented from National Rent a car. The ladies in Caracas are truly world class. I thought I broke my neck, not once, but twice from rubber necking.
