Tender is the Night

Sunrise near the Quai des Etats Unis
Nice, and the Riviera, has long been a magnet for the monied set. Until fairly recently (latter half of 20th century) it was more of a winter destination (because of its mild winters) than a summer beach holiday.

When I think of Nice I think of F. Scott Fitzgerald; Red Bugattis; turn of the century posters depicting palm trees, and women sunning themselves on the beach with their modest swimsuits; outdoor markets (cours Saleya); the Promenade des Anglaises; Isadora Duncan's untimely fate on the Promenade des Anglaises; the Corniches (you have not lived until you have driven the Moyenne or Haute Corniche - and if it fails to stir any romance in your soul when take its curves, you are truly a lost cause); pebbly beaches... and the feeling, if only for a fleeting moment, that you belong in the golden age of the Riviera.
a trompe l'oeil...
some thing you will see when you visit Nice...
twins...
I saw these two little old ladies from way across the street, well over a block away. I sprinted across two streets to catch up to them, only barely reaching them when they entered the outdoor mall. I didn't want to run in front of them as that would be too obvious, so I took the picture from behind. aren't they darling?

Nice offers at least an echo of an era that understood style. You sense it.
