Not too big. Not too small. Just Right.
Stunning beaches and the fact that Playa del Carmen has been spared (for now) the mega resorts of Cancun was quite enough to draw me. I wouldn't go so far as to say it is "quaint" but it goes well beyond "charming". Quinta Avenida, which runs close to and parellel to the beach is a walk-only road thru the heart of Playa. Plenty of shopping (both chic and cheesy), drinking and eating. But one can also go not too far from this part of town and find a nice town with inexpensive finds.
I loved seeing new brids every day and wandering a few blocks south of the ferry dock to the modest ruins. It can get less-than-relaxed when the ferry from Cozumel arrives/departs, but go more than 8 blocks north of there and things are lovely and serene.
It's an international destination (more so than the American-soaked Cancun) so for me it adds even more spice to my vacation recipe. It's also a great launching spot for many near-by attractions (cenotes, ruins, diving and much more)
I've heard that already it has changed drastically from it's days as a "find", so i will take advantage of it while it's still a place where one can do as much or as little as one likes. |
