Just north of the Raritan Bay in Central New Jersey lies the small urban city of Perth Amboy. During its “Golden Age”, immigration and industrialization transformed Perth Amboy and the city was also a resort town. However like the rest of urban America, Perth Amboy has seen better days. The factories are gone, the beaches are no longer in use due to contaminated waters and downtown Perth Amboy is a sad reflection of its former self. Even though Perth Amboy has been on a decline it is making a slow comeback. Crime rates dropped more than half in the past ten years, and the waterfront has seen a rebirth with the extension of the marina, new promenades, parks, modern housing overlooking the bay. Prior to the 1970’s, Perth Amboy had many Eastern European and Italian immigrants. Still a destination for immigrants, today Perth Amboy is about 75% Hispanic. Hispanics in Perth Amboy are primarily Dominican with Puerto Ricans being the next dominant group. There is also a Mexican minority in the city and a few South Americans.
