I visitid Mauritius in July. The people of Mauritius I met talked that they had the winter. Maybe it was the winter of the century ;-). During my stay I had from 22 to 28 degrees Celcius and three days were cloudy but still warm.

The people are very gentle, nice and helpful. I had no problems with communications. They speak English and French.

I felt myself safe during the day but the night comes very quickly at 6 p.m. and could be a bit dangerous. The buses don't run any more and you have to take taxis. :-( The shops are being closed and the people go home in a hurry.
If you are looking for the night life in Mauritius you can be very disappointed. The most touristic place is Grand Baie. Maybe there you could find a bit night life. But Grand Baie is not a good point to explore the south of the island which is more interesting.
If you take the public transport it takes ages to go anywhere. The buses are very slowly.

If you don't move from five stars touristic gethoes you could have impression that you are in paradise. White- yellowsh palmy beaches and lightblue, green turkois waters make you certainly happy. If you can dive or go snorkeling you will be impressed too. But if leave the hotel and start exploring the interior you find out that the interior is a little bit different.:-(

I spoke with a Moslem in the mosque of Port Luis once. He said:
"We live in a paradise because the people of Mauritius can coexist and live in peace and harmony although they confess to different Gods."
