Marrakesh Transportation

By Train: From Rabat to Marrakesh by the night train
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: The train comes from Tanger and departures from Rabat Ville at 3.40 a.m. The station is modern and clean. If you want to wait for a train over the night as I did you can have one small problem because the station is closed between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. I stayed in front of the station and it was relatively safe for us (three travelbuddies). Feeling safe we fell asleep but we were waken up by policmen (the Moroccan policemen seemed to be very polite) at about 2.30 a.m. They shaked our hands and told us not to fall asleep. I think there is one opportunity to sleep at the station waiting for the Marrakesh train. Go down to the platforms. Maybe there you can stay over the night. There are only two toilet keepers working over the night.
The train was deleyed about 10 minutes. It was crowdy but there were some free seats. Some people were sleeping on 4 places and didn't want to make them free. Maybe it is a common thing in the night trains. One of us came in and took the place and treathened them with police and ticket collector. We finally had three seats.
The ticket costs about 120 MAD (about 12 Euros) for 5 hours journey.

Getting TO/AROUND: Each town in Morocco has its own taxi cab colour. The Marrakesh taxi cabs are sand yellow. The Marrakesh taxi drivers usually don't switch on the taximeter. If they don't want to do it haggle the price with them. Take it easy if they mock or shout. There are thousends of them and everyone wants to earn the money. There a lot of honest taxi drivers in Morocco. By the way I loved to haggle the price with them. Haggling prices is here a common thing and one of the attractions of the Arab World. ;-) I really enjoyed it.

From Djemma El Fna to the bus station don't pay more than 10 MAD for the jouney (never pay for person - petit taxis are not collectiv taxis).
From Djemma El Fna to the Jardin Menera about 10 MAD (1 Euro) - 9 MAD were indicated on the taximeter.
