Penola is 50 Km from Mt Gambier and well worth a trip out to it. Penola was founded in 1850 by Scottish born Alexander Cameron who had squatted in the area in 1845.Penola has a lot of history to offer its visitors as you will see if you take a walk down Petticoat Lane.Penola had legacies left behind by many Australian poets: Adam Lindsay Gordon, William Ogilvie who were all inspired by the experience of rural life. Petticoat Lane allows you to wonder back in time though timber and stone cottages which still hold the charm and character of days gone by. Some of these cottages are still lived in today, others have become craft shops or tourist spots. |
