"Hakodate - The Million-Dollar Night Scene" Hakodate by chatterley

We came for the Night-Scene, and...

we got more than what we bargained for! Admiring the night-scene of Hakodate (touted as one of the top 3 in the world, besides Hong Kong and Napoli) on Mt Hakodate was an absolutely romantic and beautiful experience. The downside was the weather - it was extremely cold and windy, and we couldn't endure being out there in the wind for more than a few minutes.

Although the snow could be a bit annoying and made our travel a tad inconvenient, it was a special experience to see the sights and attractions covered under a thick white blanket. Undaunted by the weather, we soldiered on, slipped and fell on the road a couple of times, hid inside restaurants and cafes and enjoyed hot coffee or shio ramen when it got too cold, and eventually did manage to see quite a bit of Hakodate.

What we saw...

These were some of the places we visited:

Old Public Hall (see picture),
Hachiman-zaka slope,
Goryokaku and the Tower,
Hakodate Bay,
Episcopal Church,
Russian Orthodox Church,
Waterfront Warehouses etc

In my opinion, the "must-see" is definitely the night scene on top of Mt Hakodate.

Food Glorious Food...

We LOVED the food in Hakodate! Our 2-night stay in the hotel (Japanese-style) included breakfast and dinner. We did not expect to see 10 dishes per person for the dinner! Dinner on first evening (for one person) included 1 hairy crab, abalone and other seafood in a steamboat, fresh assortment of sashimi etc! On day 2, dinner consisted of shrimp sashimi, tempura, uni in steamboat, beef stew, scallop etc. Heavenly delights!

We also tried the famous shio ramen (the hot soup and noodles made us feel warm and good on a cold cold snowing day), the crab feet+uni+salmon roe don, etc.

Would love to go back to Hakodate... just for the food again!
