Smokin' the Salmon

Ekuk is a village that lies 16 miles south of Dillingham and 340 miles west of Anchorage. Yupik and Athabascan people have lived for centuries in this region, one of the richest salmon fishing areas of the world. I spent my first summer in Alaska working at a salmon cannery there for 16 hour days, no days off at the peak of the season. I really looked forward to my daily walks through the village. During the winter, the population dwindles down to 2 people, the canneries caretakers!

Strong Religious History abounds...

Throughout this area of Alaska, you find a very strong presence of the Russian Orthodox religion. There are still many beautiful churches to photograph.

One of the shortest landing strips in the world!!!

Always be on the lookout for small bushplanes!
