Soon to be flooded thanks to a dam, Meroe is one of the most important sites in Sudan and has some of the oldest pyramids in the world. Scholars still have debate about the people who used to live there, but there were definite links to the Egyptian Phoaronic kingdoms, and some even think that they had quite a bit of influence on them and weren't just outposts. I'm still quite appalled that they are allowed to be flooded.
