Volubilis is a ruined Roman city in Morocco (near Meknes). It was one of the Roman Empire’s most remote outposts and at its peak, it house an estimated 20,000 people. The residents of Volubilis were given Roman citizenship and were free from taxes. Some of them were very wealthy, with huge estates.
It’s sad that a lot of the marble and other valuables were carted away in the 18th century for the building of Meknes. There is a huge man-made hill behind from all the waste created when Volubilis was excavated. |

We were free to roam around without running into to loads of other tourists. There were a few roped off areas that I got caught maneuvering around trying to get a better look at one of the well preserved mosaics there. I got the whistle blown, literally. A little man came by and yelled at me in French. (I may have understood him if he wasn’t yelling.) Even though I was in no way close to stepping on those precious mosaics, and wouldn’t dare anyway. I was disappointed to later on see a GUIDE lifting up the ropes for other tourists. |
With only the information I had from the Lonely Planet guide, I feel I got a pretty clue of what life was like. Although it would have been nice to have had a guide show us the more obscure ruins. |
