Almost Time Travel

by ttishbite - last update: May 10, 2005

After seeing The Legend of Suriyothai (a film about the Queen of Ayutthaya, who fought and died to protect her husband and king's life joining the battle against the invading Burmese), I knew I had to see Ayuthaya for myself. Ayuthaya was a great kingdom. Its capital had more than one million of inhabitants, more than in European capitals at the same time.

Ayuthaya was defeated by Burma and destroyed. (Buddha statues were molten in order to get the gold.) Although most of it is in ruins, I was almost transported back in time to its glory days. The remains of the red brick streets and chedis were stunning.
I can just imagine the queen's white elephant parading down that walkway.
