First time on the island, and took me a while to get used to the massive mountains, the surprisingly green scrub and the millions of olive trees! A beautiful wild coastline, with tiny mountain villages, fishing, tourists, steeped in history and myths and legends. Heard the one about the birth of Zeus at least 4 times! |
| | War and Peace The beautiful silence of Souda Bay cemetary. The Allied Forces cemetary is kept by Greek people with donations made by the EU, and in this bright and reverently maintained triangle lie over 1400 men who lost their lives in the second world war. The loss of so many young men, some only 20 years of age, made me feel quite sad and emotional. Every name inscribed is no doubt still remembered somewhere in the world by their families and friends. |

| | Venetians were here! The architecture of the Western cities of Chania and Rethimnon show the 400 year legacy of Venetian rule, followed by 250 years of Turkish occupation. Chania is a captivating charming city, set against the White Mountains and the second largest in Crete. The Venetian fortifications around the harbour are still impressive. |
