I am currently living in Hull, which is often referred to as being 30 miles outside of England. Many years ago there wasnt a motorway link - sob sob.... we now have good links to the major routes and a beautiful single span suspension bridge across the Humber estuary, which goes to.... emmm, well just over to the other side really! It does cut off a 30mile journey around the estuary but many people felt the bridge to be a bit of an expensive folly, - after all, our paddle steamer ferries did the crossing quite well and sort of romantically! Many a time the 30 minute journey took 1 hour crossing the moving sandbanks. Well Hull is not where I started from but is now where I live, and I am proud to be in a city which has weathered many economic storms, and is full of interesting places and characters. Leeds and York are only an hour away, as are the bracing sea breezes of the East Yorkshire coastline, - nothing better than fish and chips out of a newspaper in the drizzle on a damp promenade!
My dad was in the Army which shuttled us between England and Germany. I have been a single traveller for many years, having visited Italy, France, Germany, Austria, New York, Seattle, Florida, former Yugoslavia, Romania, Malta, Tunisia, Turkey, Spain, and two fabulous trips lately to Australia. |

| | Hull - it aint so bad folks!! In its heyday, Hull was a major fishing port, boasting 350 Trawlers! The cod wars and containerisation has decimated this and now only around 35 trawlers leave for the icy Icelandic waters. The people are hard working and gritty.Hull was granted a royal charter in 1299 by Edward I and named King's Town upon Hull. It flourished in the Industrial Revolution as a sea port and maritime base. It was badly damaged by German bombing during the second world war. The current population is around 350,000 and the major industries are oil refineries, food processing, light manufacturing and paints. The labour based council promotes the City extensively - it has several pleasant park areas, the foreshore has been developed into a country park. The city centre boasts a number of modern retail malls, and the Marina is a beautiful modern construction giving the city an affluent feel. The Speedboat Regatta is an exciting annual event. Excellent conversions of grain warehouses on the edge of the Estuary along with the new Maritime museum "The Deep" have re-energised the city centre and attracted many new visitors to the City. |
