The Cloth Hall (Sukiennice): If you are fond of jewellery made of amber...

  • The neogothic market hall in the middle of the main square (Rynek Glowny) called Sukiennice (cloth hall) was the original trade center of the city. You will find many shops (rather stalls only) selling mainly souvenirs made of amber and furs. If your eyes are too much dazzled by the millions of odds and ends, look up to the wall to have a look at the coat-of-arms of Polish cities.

  • There are several synagogues in the Jewish quarter (Kazimierz) but most of them are now museums only. An exception is the Tempel Synagogue which is a real place of worship.
Although it's the youngest one in Krakow (1862), it has a patinated oriental interior that has been recently renovated.
    A visit costs 5 PLN.

  • The memorial park of the ill-famed death camp is located in Oswiecim, 60 km west of Krakow. It's one hour by car (main road # 44 or the motorway A4 dir. Katowice).
Admission is free, parking costs 7 PLN.
It's open from 08.30 until dark.
You need at least one hour to see Auschwitz and another one for the nearby Birkenau site.
