A ghost city

by Robert_Hun - last update: Jun 25, 2005

Fatehpur Sikri is one of the finest examples of Mughal architectural splendour at its height. Though the city is in ruins, it's definitely a place to visit if you are and have some free time in Agra or if you take road transport between Delhi and Agra.

It was the temporary capital of the Moghul Empire during the reign of Emperor Akbar (1570-1586), now a ghost city with impressive gateways and ornamented palaces built in red sandstone.
It's located on the Delhi-Agra road, 40 km's from Agra.

Fatehpur Sikri is the best example of the culmination of Hindu and Muslim architecture built mainly in red sandstone. Its mosque is said to be a copy of the mosque in Mecca and has designs derived from the Persian & Hindu architecture.
