Reykjavik is the captal of Iceland and has a population of roughly 250,000 people. The city is situated at the mouth of Faxafloi bay, which is key for whale watching.
Over the years Reykjavik has become a nexus for nightlife and general recreation. Among other things, the city has a number of geothermally heated pools as well as a man-made geothermal beach called Nauthólsvík. Ever since alcohol was legalized in the late 1980s/early 1990s, Reykjavik has emerged as a leading nightlife capital.
As is the case with the rest of Iceland, Reykjavik is expensive. Even after several inquiries from the locals we were not able to get a clear reason as to why. If I were to guess, I would say that transport costs factor into prices. However, it is still possible to be in Reykjavik on a limited budget. For example, I spent roughly 20-30USD a day on food in Reykjavik, based on eating a light lunch as well as a decent dinner.
I found the people of Reykjavik to be fairly friendly and generally warm hearted. Although some locals might be a bit reserved at first, a good ice breaker would be to impress them by learning a little Icelandic. |
