Do yourself a favour and do the tourist sites! A lot of people seem to be a bit snobby about tourism in general, and will say "oh I don't like doing XXX, that's too touristy". Well ignore that way of thinking in Paris. There is a reason for the popularity of the "touristy" sites and that is because generally they are excellent and well worth visiting. Therefore, I make no apologies for this page and showing some of the already very well documented places! For a more unusual view of the city, please have a look at my Rugby World Cup Final page, and also my MyParisArtPage. No, really, please have a look!! We went for a long weekend primarily to watch the Rugby World Cup Final but had a great time doing all the standard tourist sites. I strongly recommend walking around Paris if you can coincide it with France playing rugby at home. It means that just about every Parisien is either at the match, or watching it on TV at home or in a bar. It means the streets are empty!! It is a superb place for walking about as there are so many fantastic buildings to look at and amongst. Or take a trip on the Siene early evening when it is just getting dark. All the bridges and buildings are lit up and it is a stunning city. You never know what you might come across just walking along the river bank! Have a look at what we found. | Sacre Coeur Basique - Montmartre |
| | Cathedrals Paris has dozens of great churches to visit. The most famous being Notre Dame on the island, but coming a very close second comes Sacre Coeur in Montmatre.
Get the metro to Anvers and either walk up all the steps if you are feeling energetic or catch the funicular railway.
The steps and gardens infront of Sacre Coeur are always inhabited by 100's of students and street entertainers who love to hang out there - but go inside and get some peace and quiet. This is a lovely building with a fantastic painted ceiling of the dome. Well worth a visit. You can also go in the crypt, but we didn't do this so can't really add anything other than it is possible!
When you are there just follow the road around and you will come to the famous artists square in Montmatre. Go and have a wander around and if you fancy it there are literally hundreds of portrait artists ready to paint you. |
| | The Louvre This is an amazing building with the most amazing contents. But if you haven't got the time to go in, just go and have a walk around the outside. The architecture is so beautiful and so big!! The entrance pyramid is also excellent. You can see why it caused public outcry when it was built because it is so modern and seemingly out of place, but I think it works so well and can't imagine the place without it. From the Louvre you can walk up through the Tuillerie Gardens which are gorgeous and full of amazing art pieces. MyParisArtPage |
