We went to Hat Yai as as a side trip from Songkhla, which is around 45 mins by car. Hat Yai is full of department stores, street stalls and markets. Many people come from Singapore or Malaysia for the shopping-since it's near the Malay border.

Hat Yai is the largest city in the south. From here-you can travel to wonderful southern beaches or cities, that are less explored. Some beautiful national parks down here.

Caution: the Thai military has been fighting with muslim rebels. Mostly the fighting has been confied to Yala, but recently the fighting has spread to Hat Yai. Earlier this year, the front of the Carrefour was bombed and there were some attacks at the airport. If you are going here, please check the status of the area.
