There are some nice dive and snorkeling sites around Phuket. The best are the Similian islands. Since it's a while away from Phuket -it's best to do a live aboard- so you can get a bunch of dives in.

Around Phuket, for diving you can dive on the king cruiser wreck. Other sites include: Shark Point and Anemone Reef. There is some snorkeling around phi phi islands.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of dead coral.

We did a day trip from Phuket to Racha Yai. It's a hour or hour and half boat ride to this island. Even though we went during the monsoon season-the visibility was quite good. Both dives were around 18-20 meters. The first dive we saw an octopus, moray eels and lots of fish. Very healthy coral. Second dive we saw a small wreck. Went with South Siam divers, http://www.southsiamdivers.com/
They did a good job was suspicious at first due to the large number, but after our first briefing by the top divemaster, he divided us into small groups-usually 4 to 5 people per group. Very professional and friendly. Their boats have air compressors on board-so they could fill the tanks and you wouldn't mess with your bcds and other equipment.

Sports Travel: Dive Koh Doc Mai and Phi Phi islands

We went diving with Santana diving (which were great) and went on three dives, two at Koh Doc Mai and another by an island (Koh Bida Nok) off of Phi Phi Le. As it's August and their off season. During this time, it may be better to dive Racha Yai, since it's sheltered. Where we dived, there was a little bit of current. Very rough around Phi Phi islands. Got really banged up trying to get into the boat. Visibility around 10 meters or so. Saw lionfish, shrimp, scorpion fish, large colorful schools of fish. Beautiful large pink sea fans at Koh Doc Mai. The highlight of the dive was seeing a gentle and stunning leopard shark, which swam right up to us. A cobia fish accompanied the large shark, which is rare, since they usually swim with whale sharks. Sadly, we didn't see any whale sharks.

Most Phuket reviews say that it rains in May. Please advise on weather in Phuket in May and whether I can do scuba diving, snorkelling & all water sports even if its raining. Also are the restaurants, road side stalls etc. open if its is raining?
