Phuket town is very interesting from an architectural standpoint. There are some great old colonial buildings-plus some shop houses. There is also a large Chinese feel to the place.

Phi Phi Don and Le are quite beautiful. There are a few nices beach. Maya Bay is the loveliest. We went to these islands after the tsunami in March. Tonsai Bay (where most of the hotels were) is very damaged. Maya bay is a nice beach to relax on. The snorkeling is so so. Lots of damaged coral, but saw one moray eel.

Patong Beach has a reputation for its sleazy nightlife. Even so, I think it's an interesting excursion. There are lots of restaurants in the area. Everything from Thai, euorpean eats to fine restaurants. Something for everyone. There is also lots of shopping. Mostly tshirts. There is also a muay thai (kickboxing) stadium a few blocks from the beach.

In the center of Phuket there is a wildlife reserve-around 23 sq kilometers of rain forest. There are two waterfalls at the site; the Ton Sai and Bang Pae. Near the Bang Pae falls there is a Gibbon reserve. There are wild gibbons, monkeys, mouse deer and other small animals in the forest. Watch out for cobras, snakes and leeches.

This gibbon reserve cares for these animals that have been abused and eventually re-introduces them back to their normal habitat. The abused animals came from bars in Thailand or for being used in tourist activities-when a tourist takes a picture with wild animals. Many handlers kill the mother and steal the baby animals-since they are easy to handle. Once they are older they are further abused and kept in small cages, since they become more aggressive. This centre is financed by tourist's donations. You can adopt a gibbon for $USD 25 -which pays for one gibbon's medical care for one year. Many of the gibbons are infected with hepatitis A and some with HIV. The organization is mostly run by volunteers, who seem quite dedicated to this cause. We adopted Lamut, a shy who was being used to have her pictures taken for tourists on Patong Beach. Also, when you are there you can hear the gibbons singing or hooting. This is how they communicate with one another-quite interesting experience.
