Luang Prabang is a small town, located on a peninsula in the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers. The town was designated an UNESCO world heritage site due to the large amount of beautiful Buddhist wats or temples. This is a very religious city. If you wake up early in the morning, you will see the locals cooking and giving food to the saffron robed monks. Who line up early in the morning for the offerings.
Luang Prabang used to be the royal city of the nation. The city was home to the Kingdom of Lan Xang (millions of elephants), which ruled for centuries, before being overthrown by the communist government in 1975.
This has to be one of the most beautiful and charming towns of Asia. It's best to stay here for a few days and enjoy the laid back lifestyle. UNESCO has put a lot of money restoring colonial buildings, streets and other sites. Even the trash cans are charming. Due to the size of the town, you can easily walk from one end to the other. |

scomoore1 Tue Jan 9, 2007 19:52 UTC I ate at the Cafe Ban Wat Sene several times. For breakfast and lunch. Great service from very nice waitstaff. Prices more reasonable than many of the upmarket places to eat in this area. | xuessium Sun Oct 30, 2005 11:00 UTC HI! Trisanna: Great page on Luang Prabang. Have seen Justin's and I should see the Mrs's too. Cheers! |
