I worked in this town for two years. After studying and working in Kuala Lumpur for six and a half years, Tawau came as a welcome relief. I still tell people that arriving at this place is akin to jumping out from a fast moving train..... You run fast for a while, lose your momentum, and finally adapt yourself to the slow pace of life in this area.
Most tourists give this town a miss. The main nearby attraction is Sipadan Island. But, there is much to discover. The amazing thing of this town is not its buildings, scenery or geography. It is the PEOPLE, mixed CULTURE and FOOD. You have to live here and mingle around to feel the magic.
People here are sincere and humble. They also have a good sense of humour. Majority are Muslims (Bugis, Bajau and Bisaya) but you will find places of worship for almost all faiths in this medium-sized town.
Update: five years, a masters degree and three kids later, i've decided to revisit this town in september 2006. come back for more updates. |
