Scary? maybe. Worth it? definitely!

by NickCh - last update: Apr 5, 2008

Beautiful lake shared with Rwanda - I crossed from Gisenyi as a daytripper.

Goma

Not much 'to see', though meet the right people and they can make it worth your while. Local knowledge sometimes makes all the difference.

Check-out the situation before you go, though, as only the city-centre was safe to visit at the time I went there. It looked a bit intimidating too, with the stares you get sometimes being a bit more than the curiousity-factor you receive in Rwanda.

After heavy rain, I've never seen so many puddles and potholes, so it didn't look particularly appealing - though to be fair, the eruption of Karisimbi a few years ago wrecked the place, and they've had more important priorities to think about than cosmetic renovations . . .

Pros:"an insight into a troubled area (Goma), friendly locals"
Cons:"rip-off curios (even though they make much of their neighbours' produce), regular power cuts"
In A Nutshell:"no 'sightseeing', more an experience . . ."
