For the price, this was one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. Modern, comfortable rooms, a big lobby. It's just that there it no entry as you take the elevator to the first floor and then the hotel starts. In July 2004 I booked a double that included breakfast for 2 for 95 euro per night. The breakfast was an excellent buffet that included fruits, meats, eggs, bacon, sausage, sweet rolls, etc, etc. The staff were very helpful

The breakfast and lounge area at the TRYP Cibeles is very warm and comfortable. This is looking toward the breakfast area.

Not knowing what to expect I booked this hotel on calle Barcelona near Puerta del Sol. It is on a small street with one door opening up to the "desk". On the plus side the rooms were large considering the price and location and age of the building. In addition, there was a refridgerator, sink and electric stove. The place was well cleaned every day. The furnishings were spartan and the inside rooms did not have any kind of view. In our room there was an extra bed that we used for our suitcases. I would have preferred an armoire of some kind. No phones in the room and you will need your own alarm clock. Good size bathroom with good working shower. Breakfast at the place downstairs was included. Coffee, tea and toast, with either jam, cheese or ham. The manager was great and spoke excellent English.
Unique Qualities: The best thing about this place was the street life on c/ Barcelona. 7-8 small restaurants all around the street. Several bars around the corner. Only a 5 minute walk to the Sol metro.

Emperador Hotel: Quality hotel with a pool on Gran Via

OK, so my room was small, and it faced West so I was hit with the late afternoon sun. But after a day at the Prado, the roof top pool was a welcome relief. Staff was helpful, but not as knowledgable as I would expect.
Unique Qualities: The pool and the view from the roof was killer. The down side is that the pool and roof is only open at 11 AM. I would have liked to exercise a bit or do some yoga early in the morning, but nnnoooooo, the roof access was locked.

I just know "take a left after Joy Eslava". Place gets pretty packed at 4:30am with people from the club and bars - the churros con chocolate taste so much better at this time of the morning. | scottishvisitor Wed Jan 4, 2006 22:35 UTC So glad you found some bargains in this fascinating city!!
