Sussex I'm on the streets of Sussex on the 30th July 2003, to find out what makes this place so special. Sussex is a very special county with a long and exciting history, including events such as the Battle of Hastings, buildings like the Brighton Pavilion and has been the home to lots of famous people. Had a long walk on the pier..munching 'Fish & Chips'... bought lots of Brighton Rock for my nephews and niece...Spent a whole day taking in the charm of this beautiful town.. it's amazing... |
Walk in the pier In the year of 1891, work commenced on Brighton Palace Pier, now known as Brighton Pier. This work involved replacing the old Chain Pier, which was primarily built as a landing stage for passenger ships crossing the English Channel. Brighton Pier was designed by Richard St. George Moore, and due to the huge financial investment that was needed, took over eight years to build. It was opened in May 1899 spectacularly illuminated by over 3000 electric light bulbs. An amazing sight in the 19th century. In 1901 a pavilion on the pier was opened, designed in the oriental style that was increasingly popular in Brighton during the period. The pavilion housed a concert hall capable of seating an audience of 1500, in addition to a dining hall, a private dining room and a kitchen. This resulted in an ideal venue for musicals, comedy drama, pantomime and variety shows, all of which proved to be exceedingly popular throughout the first half of the 20th century. |
Pier a tourist attraction Brighton Pier attracts over three and a half million tourists each year, making it the most popular free tourist attraction on the South Coast of Great Britain. Open 365 days a year, from 10.00am - 12.00am in the winter and from 9.00am - 2.00am in the summer. Brighton Pier is delighted to offer: Free Entry, Entertainment and Deckchairs!
