| This is how they clean public buildings here.. |
| | Allez les Carolos... this is one craaaazy town. Surrounded by the shells of worn-out industry, monolithic steelworks and wasted green slag-heaps (or 'terrils'), it is a largely forgooten sprawl of a place, populated mostly by the descendents of Sicilians who came here to mine coal decades ago. Le Pays Noir %*, or Black Country. Worse, it has a reputation for crime, and in particular is known to Belgians as the town of Dutroux. %* Run-down it may well be, but vibrant it is too. After Euro 2000 Charleroi's promise of inclusiveness came to fruition, and it is now a major part of Ryanair's expansion into cheap-flight Europe. %* |
This is where England faced Germany in the footy in the summer of 2000 (and Romania, too)...it's also where I spent my year abroad (99-00) where when I wasn't working as a language assistant I was sat on my bottom sipping Fruit Defendu. %*
