Avignon is a real must-see. Come on a sunny day and you will really appreciate the white stone used to build the immense Palais des Papes, where the Popes had their residence back in the fourteenth century. Yes, that's right, the heads of the Catholic church - they lived here then, not in Rome. The town is also home to the legendary Pont St. Bénézet, or Pont d'Avignon, made famous by the nursery rhyme. The distinguishing feature of this bridge is the fact that it is incomplete, but many years ago it used to stretch across the river Rhône to the mediaeval town of Villeneuve-lèz-Avignon - also well worth a peek. |
Originally this was a celtic settlement, AOUNION, which means town on the waters (or something close), before the Greeks came and developed upon the original idea. Then came the Romans, and the rest is history. But then, so is what I just said. |
