The stretch of coastline between Nice and Monaco, the Three Corniches, is surely one of the most spectacular anywhere in the world. The roads are winding and dangerous, the towns charming and elegant, the hills large and powerful, and the sea is rich and blue.
Villefranche-sur-Mer, just a little further in from Nice, is a really pretty little place. Situated by the natural harbour known as the Rade de Villefranche, flanked by the Cap Ferrat peninsular, a rocky outcrop studded with woodland and celebrity villas, this is a very relaxing palce to spend an afternoon. The old town is pink and pretty, the harbour gifted with boats, and the beach warm and popular. Cocteau used to holiday here, and there is a bust of him beside the Welcome Hotel where he would stay. Inscribed on it is the phrase:
Quand je regarde Villefranche, je vois ma jeunesse. Fassent les hommes qu'elle ne change jamais. |
