Back when I was one of the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed young legal eagles in this national oil company, it always used to amuse family and friends when I would tell them of my next exotic destination...
Scene 1
"MiZZie!! Wahhh.. still working at the same place? What are you working on, where are you going to next?"
"Oh, Niamey in a few days," I would say.
"Wow, Miami??!! That's great!!"
"No no no.. NIAMEY.."
"Oh.. where's that then?"
"Niger."
"... Oh..."... *slow nods with glazed expressions before rushing off to find another drink*
Scene 2
"So, MiZZie, wowww... we hear you're going to Malibu soon!! What a glamourous job!!"
"Eh...? Malibu... no no Aunty Madge... that would be MALABO"...
"Huh.. oh, not the one in America then...???"
"Hmm... no.. Malabo is in Africa. You know.. Equatorial Guinea???"
"WHERE???... and you're going to go... is it safe!!" *shock wheeze gasp*
NOT so glam after all, hey. Though I must say that I was never sent anywhere that I didn't enjoy... ;)))
Only thing is, it can get a bit lonely just gazing out one's hotel room window all 3 days you are there since none of your old male team members are willing to take you out with them (downside of working in such a male-dominated industry) and you have no idea where to head out since places are miles away from each other in Niger :P
And, you know, being the shy retiring demure young lady I was (muaaahahahaaa!!), I was too shy to go out by myself then anyway... what a few years can do for you. Let me at those places now!!!
So that would also explain such few photos on my Africa pages.. this was the pre-digital camera era (ahhh....)

Glad you enjoyed Miami...a shame you didn't get to visit Disneyworld while you were thete, hehe! I had same problem going to Georgia, people thought I was going to Atlanta!! Niamey sounds quite interesting, a place I'd like to see one day :@P
it's just great when you go to a less traditional destinations and people's reactions can be really funny indeed !! I had the same reaction regarding Bulgaria , where I also ate tripe !
Funny story ! it reminds me when I was going to Sierra Leone. .. You know this little island in the Carribean !
Hey, You madam, I was there till 8.35pm but no sign of you pun?
an interesting page mizzie!!! very cool to go to such places through your work. i too work in a male dominated industry.. gotta keep those sausage in check all the time! ;-)
What a wonderful experience to have seen such a far off place (far off for us that is). It must have been an exhilerating feeling to exit the airport upon your arrival there & take in such a different culture. Great page Mizzie.
