So Much To See, So Little Time...

This page will take some time to complete to do this wonderful area & its people any measure of justice... i have started with some travelogues but do come back and look at my tips when i'm done!

Kampung Belum Baharu is the new village of Belum where the villagers of the old village of Belum, deep in the Royal Belum rainforest, were evacuated and moved to when the area became a hotbed of communist activities etc. since World War II.

Since VT doesn't actually have a Royal Belum page, I'll be putting more info on the rainforest and surrounds here but also a bit about the village itself.

Trekking Into The Royal Belum: 20-24 May 2005

The final team expanded to nearly 200 members comprising of PERHILITAN rangers, JPS, aborigine guides and porters (from the Negritos of the Jahai tribe who we had the great fortune to visit!), naturalists, wildlife photographers, river and irrigation people, the Global Environment Center, police, a Fire & Rescue team (jdlastra - u know what i'm thinking!!), the Army, Navy pilots who kindly flew us in their Fox Fennec for aerial surveys of the rainforest and rivers, not forgetting a full team of medical officers including emergency physicians whose previous assignments included mercy missions in Acheh, and who-knows-else too numerous to mention not forgetting the general taggers-on like yours truly! ;)

I was pretty nervous to begin with since I hadn't been into the jungle for years! And "belum" in the Malay language literally means "not yet" or "never before"... very apt in my case. But there was so much to do and too many fascinating things to experience... creatures great and small, from the tiniest frogs (amelia, u would've loved 'em!!), to every form of creepy crawly, all manner of droppings - elephants, tapirs, seladangs (wild ox) - kijang and otter tracks, plants and flowers and fruits and trees of every hue... We also went drifting on the river by night staking out the elephants... and we saw them THREE nights in a row!!! The second night was most spectacular... as we tied our boat to a big piece of driftwood, listening to nothing but the rain falling on the boat covering... all of a sudden we were regaled by the awesome sounds of a Malayan tiger roaring its lungs out enough so the whole forest reverberated, sounding off against a very protective bull elephant trumpeting for all he was worth defending his pack of 15 including several lil baby ellies and we have a couple of nightshot photos of that. As if nearly four minutes of this weren't enough... the elephants recovered to take a dip in the river... to hear the sounds of lil baby ellies harumping and snorting just meters away from us in the river was really quite indescribable...

Part of the team - the hardy ones! - DID find the source of the Perak river, which was actually the main mission of us going. There are two main sources, the confluence of Sg. Merah and Sg. Machang forms into the Sg. Perak proper... the terrain to the very source was considered too hard-going & time consuming so my mum and I had to settle for trekking to the confluence and rafting back down to the campsite... but even that was a special experience in itself... see travelogue photos!

Trying Out The Blowpipe

Yes... i DID hit the target! ;)
