There are many different sides to Langkawi, indeed it's an archipelago of about 100 islands, which you would only fully experience if you come back a few times and stay at different places. On the one hand, it's an island filled with mysterious legends (Mahsuri's Curse, Lake of The Pregnant Maiden, Mount Mat Chinchang, Field of Burnt Rice, etc.) and on the other you get wonderful picturesque landscapes of paddy fields and village huts, idyllic beaches, beautiful resorts, 50 million year old rainforests etc.

Langkawi is also a duty free island, which technically means all the goods sold are tax exempted. Booze is one of the main reasons for expats living in Malaysia to go to Langkawi. However, price-wise, other than for alcohol which is heavily taxed on mainland Malaysia, you might be better off bargaining for electronics and other goods in KL.

Major international events are also held in Langkawi including the Tour De Langkawi and the Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace (LIMA) airshow, during which times the island will be at near-full capacity.
