My favorite summer activity is to rent a kayak and paddle along the shore and beaches of Lake Tahoe. I usually rent a single sit-on-top kayak from Kayak Tahoe (530) 544-2011 at the Timber Cove Lodge. Many hotels, like Camp Richardson and the Fireside Lodge offer kayak rentals to guests also. It's just a great experience to float along in your personal boat, soaking up the sun and fresh air, paddle through occasional swells (Tahoe always gets windy in the afternoons) and be out on the amazingly gorgeous water. I recommend water sandals, nylon shorts, a bathing suit, nyon top, sunglasses, hat with brim, sunscreen, water and snacks. There may be a watertight storage port in your boat, or you can stash your bag at the kayak rental shop or in your car. The lakeshore are all no-wake zones for motorboats and jetskis, and it is strictly enforced, so you don't need to worry too much about getting run over/capsized. July, August, September are the best times of year for kayaking on the lake.
