A traditional town on the east coast of Kassandra on Halkidiki.
We visited in May 1990 and 1991 and it was reasonably quiet then.
There is a preservation order on the centre of the town, disallowing new building works. This is a good thing having seen some of the resorts further down the coast, all built up and pretty horrendous.
The town tumbles down the hill and ends on a cliff top with good sea views. Most of the buildings are fairly old and red roofed and give the town an attractive element.

The Place

There were a reasonable amount of tavernas in 1991 but I expect there will be many more now. Some were traditional, which we preferred and others catered for those who liked international food. Generally, if you ate where the Greeks were, you were on to a good thing. One night we made the mistake of eating at a place that was serving all sorts of fancy stuff and it was dreadful. Totally tasteless and expensive. Apparently this place was owned by a Dutchman who was out for a quick kill (so we were informed by a Greek!!)
The streets around the square are closed to traffic in the evenings so it's quite pleasant wandering around, deciding where and what to eat.
There is plenty of accommodation although a lot is given over to package holidays of all nationalities. I know Thomson stay here, on the British side, but who else, I'm not sure.

Beaches

Our beach, Afitos

Afitos has two beaches, both a good 10 min. steep walk downhill (of course uphill on the return!!!) On the walk down you'll pass water pouring from the cliff-face from natural springs. The wild flowers are beautiful and very colourful.
The main beach, where most people seemed to land on, was beautifully sandy but had a rocky reef running out to sea which made swimming a bit tricky. There was a big hotel complex slap bang on the beach here with it's own swimming pool, open to the public. Not our scene so we opted for the smaller beach to the left at the bottom of the hill. We called it Fisherman's Beach as there were boats moored and on the beach. It was wonderfully quiet and often we were the only people on the beach. There was one ethnic, closed taverna so it was very peaceful.

Nice place indeed. We have spent few days around in june 2009 and the place is lovely. The center seems to be still the same as 18 years ago... and stii looking lovely.

Very warm comments about this less know Greek destination. I also loved your pictures bringing back good memories from tiny Greek villages :)
