General Tips: Beyond The Lighthouse....

Favorite Thing: Walk to the outdoor theatre and continue up the steps at the far side. These lead you past the locked lighthouse up to a beautifully shaded area with two little churches, seats and tables, a water fountain and wonderful views across the Argolikos Gulf. It is a very peaceful place and well thought out. Once again, the local council have made the most of a scrubby bit of hillside.
Fondest Memory: We had a peak in the little church and lit a candle for my mum and Nick's parents. On a very clear day you can make out Palamidi Fortress in Nafplion.

General Tips: Manos Rep

Favorite Thing: For the English who read this and are holidaying in Paralio Astros with Manos, you will find you'll have a gem of a rep in Al. She's big on antiquities and paints a very descriptive picture of such places as Mycenae and Epidavros and she's also an excellent speaker at the welcome meeting. She's the sole Manos rep in Paralio Astros and says it's not a location most reps want to handle, being isolated, very Greek and the fact you are on your own. Al handles all problems with efficiency and is on call 24 hours a day (poor thing!) She also has a great sense of humour and is a cat-lover!!!! You'll see her often in resort, pedalling her company vehicle, her bike!!
Fondest Memory: One night, after midnight, a fellow resident at Astra couldn't get into his room. The lock had broken and both he and Nick had had a good go at opening the door to no avail. They had to call Al, who obviously had to get up and dressed and pedal over to Astra. In the end, she asked if Nick could take the lock to pieces with his screw-driver, which he did. In the morning, a locksmith was called. Oh, the joys of being a rep!!!!

General Tips: Small Alleys....

Favorite Thing: Paralio Astros is full of little alleys (or ginnels as we from the north call them.) There are lots from the shopping road to the larger road behind and some are very pretty. Of course, cats not being stupid, find these shady places and add to the scene. Another thing we noted was that wherever there was a gap in the buildings, a totally unnecessary road would be in the process of being made to link up the new builds. Soon, I expect, there won't be an open piece of ground to be found.
Fondest Memory: Passing along one ginnel there was a little house on the right where at least 5 cats would be laid out. On the left was another house with at least another 6 cats, complete with collars and a litter tray!!!

General Tips: Fruit For Free....

|
Favorite Thing: Everywhere you went in Paralio Astros you would be falling over fruit trees. Oranges seemed to be growing wild as well as lemons, prickly pear and even medlars, in our accommodation. We especially enjoyed the juicy, extremely tasty medlars in Astra's garden. This is an old fashioned fruit which you don't often see, but I seem to think it grows, or did, in England. It is a cross between a plum, nectarine and possibly apricot. It's quite tart but not too sour. It's a softish texture and you peel the rather tough skin and are left with this juicy mess!! Philip really loved his medlars. In the half finished building next door, lemons were dropping from the trees like flies. Such a waste.
Fondest Memory: Making freshly squeezed juice from mandarins we had given. Absolutely delicious. We had an excellent juicer in our apartment, a simple squeezer with a prong to spear the fruit and a cap that screwed over the fruit. It left nothing of the fruit behind.

mvtouring Wed Oct 21, 2009 14:03 UTC great page, nice tips. Just uploaded many tips about my recent trip to Turkey. Would appreciate if you could visit and rate me ;-) | JLBG Mon Sep 22, 2008 21:45 UTC Wow, an anti aircraft gun working! I can understand how that could be a great play! This Villa of Herodes Atticus seems to be a future must see! I agree with you about Epidauros! | khartsiotis Sun Dec 30, 2007 15:32 UTC Thank you for this glimpse of Paralio - we lived there for a year in 2003/4 and loved it - glorious in deserted January. Well worth exploring away from the obvious sites and going up to this side of the Parnonas range as well - if not damaged by fires? | janetanne Wed Sep 19, 2007 09:22 UTC Hi Chris. How are you doing? Life is almost back to normal here in Greece. Elections over; Fires OUt! School back in session; my lessons beginning full...:):) |
