Coigach Area

And Onto Achnahaird......

Old Dornie
Previous page:Lochinver

This page comes under Achiltibuie as it is about the one place in this area VT recognises!

So, after the tortuous road from Lochinver, we finally hit the road to Achnahaird. Although this is still narrow, it's mainly on the level and visibility is a little better.

Our plan was to hopefully stay at the camp site at Achnahaird,as by this time, we needed to empty the toilet and fill up with water. We did notice there were places we could have stayed on Loch Osgaig if the site was not to our liking. Thankfully, the site was very much to our liking, a huge grassy field sloping down to the sand dunes and large beach of Achnahaird bay. There was plenty of room to spread out and not be anywhere near anyone else, so long as we didn't mind not being by the beach. In actual fact, the higher up the field you camped, the better the views. More of the site in accommodation tips.

From our base at the site, we had a couple of trips out on the motorbike, across Rubha Mor and down as far as the road goes south, to Achduart. This takes in Old Dornie, a strange little harbour,as well as a few settlements on the coast, including Achiltibuie and Badenscallie.

This coastal run is spectacular, with stunning views to the Isle of Ristol and the Summer Isles. Boat trips run from the pier just north of Achiltibuie to the largest of the islands, Tanera Mor. As we arrived at the pier, the rain had just started and the weather was closing in. We headed off back to camp, a rather damp ride back!

Much of Coigach is inpenetrable, it's landscape is mountainous, particularly in the south east and has only two roads in. Both are unclassified and probably the more favourable is the road from the A836 and along the three lochs of Lurgainn, Bad a Ghaill and Osgaig,. The alternative route is the one mentioned on my Lochinver page. Either road will take you longer than anticipated, you'll need to stop as much as the road allows, to drink in the views as well as to let people pass.

Don't miss this area!!

I'm sure you would agree this is a dramatic location :( Such a pity that the campsite has closed - this place doesn't need all singing & dancing campsites what a pity that nature can't be contained
