This page is about an area rather than one place and includes Witherslack and Cartmel Fell. I put it under Bowland Bridge because that is very close to where we based ourselves.
There is an area between Kendal and Windermere in South
Cumbria, that is little known, little travelled and often overlooked. Most people travel the A5074 simply to reach Bowness, Windermere and other
Lake District hotspots, completely ignoring the glorious countryside inbetween.
The A5074 is known locally as the Lythe Valley road, a valley full of damson trees, (a small, plum like fruit) growing wild as well as in orchards. In springtime a popular trip out is to the valley to admire the damson blossom and in Autumn, to buy the small, black/purple fruit for pie and jam-making. Damson gin and liqueurs are also local delicasies and the fruit is often incorperated into menus in the local eateries.
Take a left off this main A road after about 5 miles and you'll find yourself in another world. Narrow roads meander through stunning scenery, woodland and open fell land, limestone crags and tinkling streams. Best of all, hardly any traffic.
Recently,we had an unexpected weekend away, in the van, in this area, staying on a Camping Club CL. It was another of those idyllic times, never to be repeated again under the same circumstances. The sun shone, we explored the narrow roads on the motorbike and we even had an autumn BBQ.It was just perfect.
