If you want to step back in time at least ten years then you'll love Dalton and it's people. It's the sort of place where everybody say's "hello" when out shopping so it can be a time consuming activity!! |
| | Has Anyone Heard Of Dalton? Dalton-in-Furness has been our home town for twenty-two years and we love it!!! It is located in south west Cumbria on the fringe of the Lake District and is found on the O.S. Landranger map 96 grid ref. 230/735. Dalton 's population is c. 11,000 and the town has the usual shops and it's own leisure centre and swimming pool. If you require the cinema, bowling, drive-thru takeaways and much more then Barrow-in-Furness] is just four miles away (pop. c. 65,ooo). The beauty of living in Dalton is obvious with all the attractions of the Lake District just up the road and a wild and desolate coastline in the opposite direction. Living in western Cumbria gives us the benefit of easy access to the lesser known {and therefore quieter] parts of the Lake District
.Dalton's main industry was iron ore mining, dating back to the 13th century and lasting until the early 20th century.Inlater years most of Dalton's population worked at the Vickers Shipyard in Barrow, but now there is a great deal of unemployment as the shipbuilding industry declines.
The nearest tourist information offices are at Barrow in Furness and Ulverston.
Cumbria's top tourist attraction, SOUTH LAKES WILD ANIMAL PARK is situated on the outskirts of Dalton and is a great day out. It is probably Britain's best conservation zoo park.
So if any of you are in the area give us a go. We have also got a castle and an abbey!! Another of Dalton's claims to fame is the artist George Romney who was born here and is buried in St. Mary's churchyard. For further information on Dalton-in-Furness contact www.daltononline.co.uk |
| | Off the Beaten Track We are situated at the end of the longest cul-de-sac in England, near Barrow-in-Furness, once famous for it's submarine and shipbuilding. Now, Barrow is probably better known for the "Lady in the Lake" murder. |

Pawtuxet Thu Feb 19, 2009 17:28 UTC A bit of the sea... a good parade... and a few ruins scattered round...sounds like a lovely place to be. | southlakeslocal Wed Dec 17, 2008 20:20 UTC They have a 5 star food hygiene certificate, but their 1 star customer care leaves an awful lot to be desired! Head for Great Urswick just a few minutes away to the General Burgoyne pub and restaurant, ten out of ten in all departments. | Regina1965 Tue Oct 21, 2008 11:44 UTC Lovely beaches :D And wouldn't mind visiting the Zoo as well.
