Over the Bridge At Kylestrome/Kylesku

This place appears to be called Kylesku everywhere except on Virtual Tourist.

From Scourie, we continued heading south, not too sure where we were going to spend the night, as usual. We had one or two contingencies, but nothing definite.Enroute to wherever, we stopped at the Kylesku bridge, drinking in the spectacular views as the sun came out.

It is really a magnificent road bridge, opened in 1984 by the Queen. Up until then, a small ferry plied across the straights here, from as early as the 1800's when it was a rowing boat, carrying mainly farmers, whose cattle were left to swim across the water. In later days, a larger ferry transported vehicles and in the 1970's, commercial vehicles fully laden could cross, on the Maid of Glencoul. Amazingly, the ferry remained free of charge for much of it's lifetime.

There are a couple of viewpoints, one at either end of the bridge, enabling you to take in the span of the bridge as well as the glorious views towards the mighty Quinag along the Loch a Chairn Bhain and to the Lochs Glencoul and Glendhu.

Today, the village of Kylesku is bypassed by the bridge, but it's worth taking the turn down to the former ferry terminal and village where there's the Kylesku Hotel, serving food. Boat trips run from the jetty up the loch to view the Eas Coul Aulin waterfall (the highest in Britain) and also Kerracher Gardens at the seaward end of Loch a Chairn Bhain, only accessible by boat.

I would really have liked to have visited the gardens but the sea was very choppy and the weather was closing in, so they remain unseen by us until the next time!

We used to go to Kylesku fairly often, usually by train, but also by car and take the ferry across. My last visit was a few months before the bridge opened, and I took photos of it then..
