An Intriguing Corner Of Wester Ross

Coastguard boat in the morning mists at Aultbea
Previous page:Little Gruinard

With the midges still very much in evidence the following morning,we packed up hurriedly from our camp above Gruinard Bay and headed west. A coastal mist enshrouded the landcape and it was difficult to see anything.

We had come to a decision that we would really like to be able to use our boat again, before the end of the holiday. We had had little luck with the fishing so far and I felt we needed an all out final fling, so would stop at the first place that would enable us to launch the boat.I knew there was a caravan site in Laide, fairly close by, so we called in to have a look.

The sun was just breaking through the morning mist as we parked on the seafront pitching area.Oh, it was glorious, looking straight out over the beach to Gruinard Bay with the sun sparkling on the calm blue sea. Although the touring area was not overly large a few outfits were packing up which gave us plenty of seafrontage to choose from. And there was access for us to get the boat out! Perfect, we went to book in.

As we had arrived at the site around 10am and the tide wasn't due in until the early evening (which we needed to enable us to launch more easily)we decided to explore the coast to the north east and the south west, on the motorbike. We looked at the beautiful beach at Mellon Udrigle in the north and then Aultbea and Mellon Charles to the south.

Laide itself is just off the main road and has a post office, shop and garage all rolled into one.

The jetty looks like the one we had when we lived at meikle Ferry. Love the mist.
