Skipton. Somewhere I visited as a child and nowadays a town we often bypass.
October half term and once again, we were determined to make the most of the long weekend we had at our disposal. Motorhome packed, Philip home from school, off we set late on Friday afternoon.
We had three definite goals; Skipton Castle, Malham Cove and Bolton Abbey in Airedale and Wharfedale. We managed to visit all three and a few extras as well.
Our first night, purely an overnighter, was a Certificated site west of Hellifield. From there we headed for Malham Cove and managed to squeeze on to another CL, near Airton, south of Malham , after spending the day exploring Malham Cove. The following morning, a slow start, owing to the frozen ground and frosty conditions. Once thawed, a run out on the motorbike to Janet's Foss and Malham Tarn. Back to pack up and move on to have a look at Skipton Castle. Slightly delayed, here, as the van wouldn't start. Green Flag spent an hour thawing the HTC leads and off we went.
The afternoon was an enjoyable mix of viewing the castle and meeting up for a drink with an old friend.
Third and last site, above Silsden. From here we re-visited Skipton to browse round the market, walk along the canal and have a pub lunch. Refreshed, we next visited Bolton Abbey and were much impressed with the grounds, ruins and church and where Nick and Philip walked across the stepping stones in the River Wharfe and managed to NOT fall in. Time was now running out and I still wanted to walk to the Strid, the narrowest part of the river where the water comes hurtling through the small gap. This done, it was back to base for our last night and home the following day.
Skipton is a popular market town in Craven or Airedale, not sure which it is currently!! in North Yorkshire. It's population is around 16,000 for which it has a large variety of shops as well as the market four days a week.
It forms the south west boundary of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and is known as the Gateway to the Dales. It's an excellent base for exploring many Yorkshire gems, such as Malham, Grassington, Burnsall, Bolton Abbey and Ilkley as well as the steam railway between Embsay and Bolton Station (for the abbey.) The Leeds - Liverpool canal runs through the town, offering pleasant canal walks, right in the heart of the town. And then there's the magnificent castle, one of the best preserved in England. So much on offer here....
Much of the landscape around here consists of limestone cliffs and crags mixed with millstone grit, leading down to green valleys (dales) bordered by drystone walls. Such beautiful landscapes everywhere.
Skipton was finally bypassed in 1981, taking away the constant stream of traffic but still leaving an extremely popular and thriving market town, both for tourists and locals alike.
- Pros:Busy, manic on market days.
- Cons:An excellent base for seeing so much in this area....
- In a nutshell:Town, country, canal, castle, this town has it all....
I was horrified to see the cost of a visit to the public toilet in Skipton. I'm not sure if it's the same throughout... more travel advice
Skipton is an extremely busy and popular market town but it does have a fair number of carparks. Be warned, though, that... more travel advice
