The B 869 To Drumbeg And Onto Stoer

Our motorbike at Stoer Lighthouse
Previous page:Kylestrome

After crossing the bridge at Kylesku, we headed westwards, taking the very narrow and often steep, B869 to ultimately meet the A837 just north of Lochinver. This is in the Assynt district, renowned for it's individual, very distinctive, soaring peaks rather than mountain ranges and is one of the least populated areas in Europe.

What a road this is, especially in a motorhome!! Apart from it's lack of width and small passing places, there were some nasty bends and gradients which Nick coped with admirably, as did the old Talbot!! (Actually, little did we know that we were to travel on a worse road, yet to come!!) Still, it was a delight, when we could see what was coming towards us and we really enjoyed the challenge. It passes loch after loch, where unusually the fishing rights belong to the local crofters who formed a trust and bought uo 21,000 acres of the Assynt Estate. It means that fishing permits for visitors are relatively cheap and easy to get hold of.

Don't be in a hurry, it won't do you any good as this route from leaving the A894 south of Kylesku to rejoining it just north of Lochinver will take a couple of hours.Long after we had made this journey I read that it's best to make it from north to south, for the dramatic views. Fortunately, that is exactly what we had done!!

This page is about the road as far as Stoer, taking in Drumbeg, the small settlements on the Stoer Peninsular and Stoer Lighthouse.
The rest of this route along the B869 is on the next page: Lochinver

So, you made it at last. Isn't it great and especially when you had bright skies, not like our grey, wet windy day.

I enjoyed your pages. The pictures remind me of parts of Nova Scotia.
