This page is about the area around the Kyle of Tongue, a beautiful sea inlet on the very north coast of Sutherland, Scotland, that is now crossed by causeway and bridge, built in 1971. This is where we headed from Bettyhill and Skerray.
The main village of the area is Tongue, just to the south east, which boasts a couple of hotels, a bank, some accommodation including a campsite and the odd shop. You can also refuel in Tongue!!
On the west of the Kyle are the pretty beaches of Talmine and the wild beach at Achininver and to the east is Coldbackie Beach. Out to the north, sitting in the sparkling blue sea,are the Rabbit Islands, uninhabited and boasting some good beaches. Views to the south are dominatd by Ben Loyal at 763 metres.There is, I believe, a footpath up the mountain from the road that runs south of the Kyle. Stop in any of the parks along the causeway and on a good day, the views are unrivalled. Just to the west of Tongue are the scant ruins of Castle Varrich, reached on foot only.
Don't come to this area looking for the high life. Walking, fishing, boating and swimming is really what it's all about. |

I too would be tempted to buy a croft here = but at such prices I think not - Wonderful area with great beaches :) I still miss Tongue & Sutherland in general! |
