FALLING IN LOVE WITH GREECE

by nickandchris - last update: Sep 14, 2009

Where to Begin....

Essentially Greek...
Just returned from our 2009 Greek holiday to Lesvos.

I fell in love with Greece on a trip to Europe in 1978 when I was twenty-one and vowed to return.

I met Nick and in 1979 I dragged him on a camping holiday to Corfu..It took him a week to adapt to the Greek way of life after which he was well and truly under the spell. He loved the Greek man's lifestyle-------sitting at a cafeneon watching the world go by all day!!! Bliss for the lazyman!!!!

Every year we return to Greece, trying to find somewhere off the beaten track for not too much money. We like quiet, non-touristy places and prefer to holiday in May-----lighter nights, greener countryside, fewer tourists and the Greek restaurant owners are still full of optimism and enthusiasm.

Favourite Greek areas we have visited so far:Pilion
Prefecture of Arcadia
East Mani
Prefecture of Messinia
Prefecture of Laconia

It All Takes Time

My Greek page will not only consist of places we have visited but will include our many memories along with some quirky local customs.
On this page I will try and record things that stand out in my memory and interesting pictures from Greek holidays.

We love the kind and generous personalities of the Greeks and the family way of life. They seem to include every age into every day life as the norm.

Our longest and most interesting holiday in Greece was in 1997 when we set off from England in April and travelled overland to Greece in our old motorhome, arriving in Greece on 19th April. Difficult to record this holiday, it covering so many areas in Greece as well as France and Italy. I came to the conclusion of writing the adventure in the corresponding pages with links to the previous and following pages. I don't know if it will work this way but will give it a try, bit by bit. On the whole, in these pages you will not find a great deal of tips just my ramblings of what I remember about the journeys made.

A Little Light Reading....

Is this still on the road today?? Taken in 1996 in Poulithra, near Plaka

Here are the places we visited on our overland adventure:

Igoumenitsa
Parga
Preveza
Vonitsa
Lefkas Island
Lake Trihounda, Etoloacanardia
Lake Kremaston in Evritania
Karpenissi, Evritania
Kastri, Fthiotida
Almiros, Magnesia
Milina, Pilion, Magnesia%L*
Ag. Kyriaki, Pilion
Milopotamos, Pilion
Chorefto, Pilion
Zagora, Pilion
Portaria, Pilion
Makrinitsa, Pilion
Loutra Edipsou, Evia
Rovies, Evia
Limni, Evia
Mandoudi, Evia
Kria Vrissi, Evia
Stomio, Evia
Paralia Kimi, Evia
Panagia, Evia
Kourfos, Argolid
Paralia Andreas, Arcadia
Plaka, Arcadia
Poulithra, Arcadia

Githeon
Ageranos, Laconia
Skoutari, Laconia
Petalidi, Messinia
Golden Beach, Navarino Bay
Giannitsohorion, Elia

Plataria, Thresprotia

Many of these places we have re-visited since our "Adventure." Some have hardly changed, others have well and truly caught up with the times. Nick and I asked ourselves whether we preferred the old Greece where everything was unorganised and took time or the new, modern version where you know exactly what you are getting and how much it will cost but not necessarily when it will arrive!! We have no definite answer, sometimes it's nice to expect the unexpected, sometimes its nice to know exactly where you stand!!

One thing is for definite; Greek hospitality remains unchanged. Filoxenia rules.
Modern Transport....

> Add to your Custom Travel Guide [What's This?]

Pros:"The Greeks, the scenery, tavernas, colours and more......"
Cons:"Becoming tricky to find accessible "Off the Beaten Track" places."
In A Nutshell:"What more could you want? It's simply Arcadia......"

Symi Island - I haven't been to this island, but some of the other ones aren't too crowded. Or it could be the season, I suppose. Thanks for the tip.

Shaking your sheet out will get rid of all the sand. Avoid getting on the bed before taking a shower.
