Local Customs: True Brits...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Not strictly speaking specific to only Cumbria but we do seem to have our fair share of BBQ's in the rain. WE WILL HAVE A BBQ!!! Once the thing is lit, there's no going back. Good job umbrellas were invented.

Local Customs: Hanging on a Line...
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • I don't suppose this occurs in Cumbria alone, hanging out the dead moles on a fence, but it isn't a particularly nice spectacle.

We came across this in the north of the county, not so far from Brampton. I know moles create havoc in the fields but I'm not well up on country matters. All the land around appeared to be used only for sheep and maybe cattle, but no agriculture. Do moles actually cause damage to animals, carry diseases etc or is it that they totally undermine the land? Whatever, I really don't know why their poor dead bodies have to be displayed as they were. And to whom?

Enjoyed a return visit with you to cumbria. Lots of new places for me here - the Castles, Abbey & Gardens right up my street! Trips to Grange, staying o/n in a B&B were a family treat circa 1950 - Dad loved the town and always gave it its full title!

I see I now have to make my way to Cumbria = I know it only through Scottish Folk songs = but I feel we would like it here.
