This little gem is a site for 5 vans only plus tents. The only facilities are a tap, chemical toilet disposal point and a toilet miles away from the main camping area. The main camping field is enormous and backs onto the crags. Woodland is on one side, and on the other is another wooded area and a driveway with grass verges, both camping areas. Just down the road is Hutton Roof's church with a crocus filled (in spring) graveyard. Very pretty. Unfortunately this site doesn't appear in this year's Camping Club site book. The owner seemed undecided as to whether to carry on opening but when we contacted her, she was happy enough to let us camp. We weren't the only ones, either. It would be a real pity if this site closed permanently, it being only 40 mins away for us. We call it our country retreat! May 2007 update. Camped here over the Mayday Bank Holiday and were annoyed by a Camping Club rally who would not let us camp on the main field. We were told in no uncertain terms that we must camp in the wooded area. Fortunately, the ground was dry as it had't rained for weeks but had it been wet, we would have had great difficulty manouvreing without becoming bogged in. It was also very midgey here but we all agreed n the end we actually preferred this camping area as it had more privacy and for Philip and his fiends, here was the added onus of a rope swing.
Unique Qualities: Out in the middle of beautiful countryside with easy access on to the limestone crags. Lovely views and wonderfully quiet.

Priory View, Ulverston: Ideally Situated For Exploring South Cumbria

This is another in the Camping Club's network of Certificated Sites (must be CC. member and only 5 vans allowed + tents.) Situated in the coastal region of Ulverston and also close to Ulverston's biggest employer, Glaxo, this site was a great suprise. It's extremely rural and superbly peaceful considering where it is located. It's a nicely mown, level 2 acre field with some trees dotted about and has views to Ulverston and Hoad Hill. Electric hook-ups, if required, are extra. There is a toilet and shower. There is a children's play area and certainly the site looked ideal for children, being away from traffic. From the site, you can easily access the Cumbria Coastal Path and within minutes you'll find yourself on a beautiful stretch of Cartmel Sands in the Morecambe Bay Estuary. We had the whole site to ourselves and all for £5.
Unique Qualities: We thoroughly enjoyed a pleasant walk on a glorious late September afternoon, setting off from the site and discovering an old industrial chimney enroute to the coast. There seemed to be no reason for this chimney's existence and no way to get close to it. It was simply in the middle of a field with no industry anywhere near. I have still to enquire about this. The clear views across the estuary to the railway viaduct and the reflections in the water were stunning for the time of year. Here,we also watched a heron fishing and were just amazed that we lived so close to this tranquil scene and yet had never been to this exact part before now. The market town of Ulverston is just up the road for all your requirements as well as tourist attractions. On Sundays there is a carboot sale at Ulverston Auctionmart, not far away.

Our overnight stay enroute to Northumberland, Easter 2007. This is a marvellous site, a Caravan Club CL. situated off the A69, on a very minor road, very close to parts of Hadrian's Wall. It's out in the wilds, which on a nice day, is spectacular. In winter, on a bad day, it's a different story. Mud and cold and fog. We've done both and this Easter, the weather was glorious when we arrived. It's a half acre of neatly mown field with electric points, toilet and hot water. Great value at £6.50 a night. There are various footpaths in the vicinity and as I said, the views on a good day are great. In the next field horses graze, one was particularly friendly. The site encourages re-cycling and it's a credit to the owners that nothing is over done, like too many signs telling you what not to do.
Unique Qualities: Open all year. In winter, we actually parked in the owners drive as the field was too boggy to get on. Very convenient for exploring Hadrian's Wall, in particular, Birdoswald fort.

As we were looking for somewhere local to stay in the motorhome, we thought we'd give this Camping Club Certificated location a try. Were we glad we did, it turned out to be everything we wanted and made for a great two nights stay. This 0.75 acre site is well off the A590, right behind the levy for the Kent Estuary. There is access to the river and the Cumbrian Coastal walk passes through here. The area is flat, so good for biking. Looking across the A590, you have lovely views of Whitbarrow Scar, a large limestone mass, again excellent walking terrain. We were the only folks staying, so had the site to ourselves. Philip took full advantage of this, driving his petrol radio controlled car full pelt, sending the gravel swirling as he skidded rouind tight bends. He and Nick also made good use of the new bb rifle and later, had a go at fishing in the Kent (I'm sure it would have been private fishing but there wasn't a sign to be seen.) Needless to say, all they managed to succeed in doing was lose some tackle!!!
Unique Qualities: For us, the unique qualityof this site was the fact that the only facilities were water, a bin and a chemical disposal point. We had no use for such fineries as electricity, although we did watch television in bed, running from 12 volts. Also the peace and quiet, being the only residents. The owners were in the midst of lambing and were kept busy with their new deliveries. This was the first place I'd ever seen new lambs with plastic coats on!! All this for £4.50 a night.

Church Stile Farm Camp Site: A Most Beautiful Location....

This is a marvellous camp site in the western Lake District, offering good old grass pitches and caters only for tents and motorhomes. There are hook ups if so required. Although it's a good few years since we have camped here, the site has an excellent up to date website with full details of it's facilities and location. We had some truly wonderful weekends here in our tent, usually enjoying good weather and always sitting round a camp fire in the evenings (not sure whether these are still allowed.) The site caters mainly for those who love nature and all it has to offer rather than for those seeking the bright lights. The rowdy element will not be tolerated!!!
Unique Qualities: The site's location couldn't be bettered, being in Nether Wasdale, close to two pubs and the Lake District's deepest lake, Wastwater. Plenty of walking for all abilities, whether it be low lying footpaths or high peak scrambles, this area has it all. Cumbria's coast is not far away, either, if you fancy sandy beaches and a paddle! Also close by is the nuclear processing plant, Sellafield, which has a very informative visitor centre with free admission. Good for a wet day!! From the campsite, the evening sun reflecting on Wastwater's screes is a sight not to miss, turning the landscape pink as it sets.

I picked this site, (close to the north Cumrian town of Shap) simply because it was in an area we didn't know too well and it was in a quiet location. What a winner this turned out to be!! The site is a 2 acre level(ish) field lined by trees, presumably planted for shelter. On our visit, the field had been newly mown but the surrounding fields were absolutely full of celandines, creating yellow carpets everywhere. We had the whole place to ourselves, which we were surprised at, given it's proximity to Haweswater and it being a beautiful early summer weekend. The site does have a toilet which was cleaned especially for us upon our arrival and we didn't even use it, preferring to use our own onboard facilities. Other amenities include a tap and a chemical disposal point. No hook ups, which we liked, so don't come here expecting to run all your electrical equipment.
Unique Qualities: Purely it's quiet location, close to Haweswater as well as the pretty village of Bampton and the town of Shap. There are plenty of pubs in the area if that's what you are looking for, but all a drive away. The owners were very friendly and the site has resident ducks! We were charged 6 a night and thought that reasonable in this day and age. It was so nice to find a basic site without electricity, just listening to the sounds of nature at work around us.
