And other useful tips, all right here

Washington Monument, with Capitol in background
You see, you do learn something here!

Welcome to America's capital, Washington DC. This was very much a "planned" city, build after the United States became a country. Seems they wanted a capital city in the middle of the country (or it was at the time). So a site was selected on the Potomac River in the late 18th century and, a few years later, a city was born.

Interestingly enough, though Washington DC was named for our first president, George Washington never served as president here. Since this city was under construction, we had temporary capitals in New York City and Philadelphia during his presidency.

Also, did you know that the British burned down Washington during the War of 1812? It's true. Served us right too, since we had earlier burned Toronto down ;-)

Let's spend a day in "our nation's capital".
Saccaranicity found herself a furry friend.

A bunch of VTers seeing that historial crap =)

A group of five VTers - Cachaseiro, Shoman, Saccaranicity, Sullybiz and I - took a day trip here from Baltoberfest. We walked much of the National Mall, four miles in total. We got in shape. We got rid of our hangovers. We fed wildlife.
We were chased by imaginary beasts. Or imaginary lobbyists.
Sullybiz - fixing a wedgie, maybe? =)

Pros:"A fun place to walk around."
Cons:"the Washington Redskins - go Giants!!!"
In A Nutshell:"Lots of historical crap - I guess you had to be there!!!"

Glad you enjoyed DC. It is, in fact, an amazing city, isn't it?

Great insights. I was particularly interested in the WWII Memorial, which was not there when I visited.
