The Palacio Real is where the King & Queen used to live. It's used for special occasions now. Tours are available in English, Spanish and French, along with other languages, and cost only one euro more than general admission-a pretty good deal. And yes, I dressed well...after all, it was the King's house!

The best thing about walking in Madrid for me is the endless opportunities to sit down and stop walking for a while. Outdoor cafes abound, and you come up on one when you least expect it...and need one the most. Sit down, have a drink, and watch Madrid pass by. This green and leafy place is the Paseo del Prado. When I visited in September, there was some sidewalk construction there.

Plaza Mayor has so much of Madrid's history. It can hold up to 50,000 people (or so I've heard), had bullfights, executions, was an outdoor market, just to name a few. Nowadays, it invites you to grab a bite to eat and something to drink at an outdoor cafe, buy a souvenir or two (it's got several shops), or just hang out and take it all in. I found Plaza Mayor quite by accident, by wandering the little streets that surround it, trying to spend some money...and there was this magnificent place. The only bad part was having to leave!

How much time you spend at the Prado likely depends on how interested you are in art, but it's a must-see in Madrid. My favorite thing was all of the beautiful portraits-it's quite enthralling looking into the eyes of someone who lived some 500 years ago. I wonder what they were thinking about?...

Puerta del Sol: It's the Crossroads of Madrid, the Heart of Spain

At some point while walking through Madrid, you're sure to find the Puerta del Sol. Several historic events happened here. Now, it's a meeting place, and you can reach just about any sight in Madrid from Puerta del Sol-Plaza Mayor is a stone's throw away. In a way, the Puerta del Sol is like New York's Times Square. In addition to all the people coming and going, it's where folks congregate on New Years Eve to welcome in the New Year-don't forget those grapes! Also, the very center of Spain's road network, Kilometre Zero, is located here. The Tio Pepe sign advertises, I believe, a brand of sherry. Wish I had a good picture of it-when you see it, you know where you are!
